The Difference Between On-Page SEO And Off-Page SEO

If you have been trying to get into the SEO game then you have probably heard of the two terms known as off-page SEO and on-page SEO. In this post I will explain the difference between the two and give you some extra tips.

On-Page SEO – Search engine optimization that takes place on your very website. This includes your title, description, HTML formatting and more components we will talk later on in this post.
Off-Page SEO – Search engine optimization that takes place outside of your website. Off-page SEO is mostly covered by building high quality backlinks.

Lets talk a bit about on-page SEO. So you have opened a new website, you wrote great content and you have a killer design, now it’s time to make your website search engine friendly!

First of all you need to ask yourself the following: “When a potential client use search engines what is the term that is most suited for my website to be found at?” Don’t limit yourself to one keyword, try focusing on five,six or even 10 keywords! Just make sure you don’t over do it.

*Tip you can use google’s keyword tool to get some keyword ideas and to check the search statistics.

You have found the perfect keywords for your website, now it is time to optimize your website for these specific keywords.

Include your primary keyword in your website’s title.Your primary keyword is the one that holds the most search volume. Don’t go after keywords that have huge search volumes because chances are that the competition is going to be hard to beat.

Write a meta description for your website and include your keywords in your description. If your keywords don’t fit the description than don’t add them. If you are trying to push keywords into your website you might do more harm than good to your rankings.

Write articles that have at least 400 words in them and include your keywords in the body of your articles. Again, don’t try to push keywords that are not related to your article. Over-using your keywords is called “keyword stuffing” and will make your website lose rankings.

*Warning – Always use original content. Never copy anyone else’s content, you will not only damage that person’s website but you will also damage your own.

There are many more on-page SEO factors and since this article also focuses on off-page SEO we won’t have time to list them all. Hopefully in the future we will make a post with a checklist listing all of the on-page SEO factors.

Off-page SEO is mostly covered by link building. Local-businesses might need to do some extra steps in off-page SEO and we might cover these steps in future articles. but for now we will talk about global off-page SEO.

When you hire a company to build backlinks for you or if you build them yourself make sure you don’t just use your domain name but actually use anchor text with the keywords you are trying to rank for.

*Tip Never focus on one keyword when using anchor text. diversity is key. You can learn more in our backlink diversity post.
